Sapelo Island lead the South in a rich variety of great tasting foods

The Sapelo Island Birdhouses is helping to restore the rich agricultural history by re-establishing three of its most famous crops such as the Sapelo Sour Oranges, the Sapelo Purple Ribbon Sugar Cane and the Sapelo Island Red Peas. Sapelo island will become a leader in great natural foods of the south again.

Sapelo Sour Oranges were brought by to the island in the 1700's. These oranges are undergoing a come back and will be available soon on the island to make great teas and jams.

Sapelo Sour Orange tea with lemon grass and kaffir lemon leaves is a great winter tea.

Sugar has been grown on Sapelo for centuries. The original Sapelo sugar cane was red and purple in color. The original cane is currently being restored to Sapelo Island.

Jerome Dixon planting several varieties of purple ribbon cane that will make their way to Sapelo Island Georgia. Clemson University is instrumental in helping with this project.
