Bringing your dog to Sapelo Island as our guest at the Birdhouses is one of the great privileges of staying in our luxury cottages.
You and your dog can have a great time and create many good memories. There are certain rules to carefully follow. This is a pristine and wild coastal environment and a balance must be stuck between the requirements of the DNR and the owners of the properties. If these simple rules are followed both you and your dog will be happy and stay safe.

There are 12 easy rules:
Rule 1: Keep your dog on leash at all times: while waiting to board the ferry, during the ride to/from Sapelo and after disembarking.
Rule 2: On the ferry, medium to large dogs are allowed to ride with you on the deck of the boat only. Small dogs in crates or dogs small enough to sit quietly on your lap may ride inside the boat.
Rule 3: On the ferry, the captain and crew are the authority follow their rules and instructions regarding boarding and riding with your dog.
Rule 4: Be respectful of others on the boat, they may not like dogs or could be afraid of them.
Rule 5: When walking around the island keep your dog with you on a leash.
Rule 6 : Clean up after your dog for he is not a Sapelo wild cow. And, this is one reason to be happy of that!
Rule 7 : When going to Cabretta beach you will walk through the forest, for the safety of your dog, keep them on a leash when going to and from the beach.
Rule 8 : The pavilion walkway leads to Nannygoat beach. Use this boardwalk to get to the beach with your dog.
Rule 9 : Keep you and your dog off the dunes. It is required by the DNR and the dunes can be very dangerous to you and your dog. The dunes harbor rare marine and coast life like birds but also is where the rattle snakes live and feed. If your dog goes on the dunes call him back but do not go on the dunes to get your dog.
Rule 10: Be respectful of nature's local residents on the island like alligators, deer, wild cows, sea turtles, river otters, and wild hogs.
Rule 11 : Hog Hammock is a farming community and people depend on their animals for food. Be respectful of live stock and keep your dog close by.
Rule 12 : Have fun but check with others near you before you let jill and jojo run on the beach.
